But it doesn't. The WD software only prevents guest access to those
filtered files, the owner can log into it and get access to
everything.

Yes it's a rubbish system for trying to block content, but thats the
method they have chosen. You do not need to install that sharing
software, it's not the hard drive that is blocking the content. If you
use it as a regular external drive, guess what? it works exactly the
same way as any other external hard drive.
