DD-WRT may or may not help your problem but apparently it can be installed even on the cut-down models. http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/downloads/stable/dd-wrt.v23%20SP2/hwsupport.txt lists the older WRT54G v1 - v4 with identification by serial number and the WRT54GL v1 and v1.1.
