I can understand your point about not wanting to leave your laptop or desktop on all the time, but it's possible to set-up the SB3s to run with an off-the-shelf NAS (so long as it can run Slimserver), or to build a NAS using Linux and standard components. The power of the SB3 is in the flexibility and openness of the approach, but the downside is that that can make it a little geeky to setup compared to an 'Apple-type' approach. You don't have to learn Linux, but if you are prepared to get your hands a little dirty, there are lots of solutions and helpful people here.
