It does need some sort of server at all times.  If you don't want to
use SS/SC, you can use SqueezeNetwork (a publicly-accessible SS)
provided the stream URL is publicly-accessible.

Trivially easy with SS/SC, currently not possible with SN.  Also SN
does not currently run LastFM or SlimScrobbler.
