If you change the display on the Squeezebox so it shows the VU meters (analogue or digital) do they flicker indicating music is being received ?
If so, it may be an issue with the cabling from the Squeezebox to the amplifier/powered speakers. Either that or the volume control is set way down :-) If they don't flicker it would indicate an issue with the Slimserver side of things.
