Yup, that will be some rogue ARTISTSORT (or equivalent) tags. I'm not familiar with the tagger you mention: mp3tag http://www.mp3tag.de/en/ is the one I and many others use. Use it to have a look at ALL the tags on the files.
Are these mp3 files? If so you might want to try asking mp3tag (there's a helpful page in the wiki here) to remove any ID3v1 tags and just leave ID3v2, that often causes problems.
