I've just done this. Built myself a custom box running Linux to act as a file server and have ripped my DVDs, also moved on a fair collection of off-air recorded mpegs. I've also moved my music collection and slimserver onto the same box so there's only one device on 24/7. There are a few "squeezebox equivalent" streamers - the popcornhour mentioned, Netgear EVA8000, Linksys KISS1600, TVIX devices: you can read about them here http://www.avforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=332 as well as many similar places I guess. None of them are exactly equivalent to the squeezebox, of course. This is a MUCH less mature market, there are MANY more video "standards" (codecs and containers) they need to try and play and much more functionality that people want (TV tuning, PVR). Some gotchas: - you need a fatter network for playing video, wireless probably isn't good enough and certainly won't be for HD - you might think it will be easy to rip your protected DVDs and for the most part it will be... but some will be tough, how much effort will you want to put into ripping something you may only want to watch a couple of times? - be prepared for buggy streaming devices HTH -- ceejay ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ceejay's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=148 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42790 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
