Thanks for the reply.  Yes, it seems to be an IP address issue alright
- it was this post
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42813) that pointed the
way for me.

I've manually set the address and it's working fine now.  

I notice a few people are having similar problems.  Perhaps if the SB3
displayed an error message when there's an IP conflict instead of a
blank screen, it might make things easier for people to diagnose the
problem.
