One theory: Noise from PSU is transmitted to SPDIF connection, causing
DAC to have a harder job recovering the clock = jitter = worse sound.
However this is easily fixed by using toslink which would not transmit
such noise to the DAC. But then again PSU noise could affect the
quality of the interface at the SB end, causing the spdif/toslink
signal to be sub-optimal at the point it leaves the SB.

Just for the record, I can't hear any difference to the signal coming
out of my external DAC with different SB PSU's.

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann
JISCO/UPCI - TACT RCS 2.2X with Good Vibrations S/W - MF X-DAC
V3/X-PSU/X-10 buffer (Audiocomm full mods)- Linn 5103 - Linn Aktiv 5.1
system (6x LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend
Supertweeters, Kimber & Chord cables
