One reason could be that they've been really busy developing a new hardware product line AND server software, which by the way is already a big step towards a more user-friendly product. And they do have an easy existing solution; use a PC. I'm pretty sure they think out-of-the-box NAS solutions are interesting, and your very long post is a +1 for that point of view together with all other requests for "a better product" . BTW.
