At least for MP3Tag, rather than mark 100 albums separately, as, say "Jazz", drag all those albums to a temp directory, open -that- directory with MP3Tag, set genre to "Jazz", save tags, wait a while (lots of tags to write), and either move 'em back, or maybe to a "genres-done" directory. You won't clobber any of the other tags so long as you leave those fields alone.
