I think i cracked it. When it doesn't go to sleep, there is lots of heavy disk activity (for 10's of minutes). I've found a power setting that alters "searching and indexing" and now it switches off within a few mins. Maybe because I just moved 200GB of music files onto this drive. i guess it is keen to get them indexed!
