I've found the Buffalo LinkStation to be an ideal platform for a SlimServer + Samba file server for a home / small office. It is a technically complicated process to install this software (firmware flash upgrade, Debian installation, compiling software, configuration...But it requires no fiddling once installed and operational. This platform is significantly more economical than the other alternatives, both in purchase cost and ongoing operations (due to extremely low power consumption).
