Yes, you need an active ethernet device (a hub or a server connected via
a crossover cable) in order to change the bridging setting.

But, why does this matter?  Are you finding that having bridging
enabled without an active ethernet connection somehow impairs the SB3's
operation?

If bridging is enabled and you later disconnect the wired connection, I
don't think the SB3 will be blasting bits out the empty RJ45 socket.  If
you want to keep the wired connection and loose the wireless one, go
back to the network setup (press and hold the left button on the
remote) and select the "Connect to an ethernet network" option.
