Doesn't the US-centric spelling just make it sound more "exotic"
elsewhere?

I notice that many places here in the states say "theatre" when they're
trying to sound more upscale and/or Euro, so I always presumed that
spelling it the US way in Europe would have the same connotation . . .
.

(An aside: I worked at one place that wanted to sound more
international than they actually were; we had an administrator from
South Africa, so she did everybody's outgoing voicemail message . . .
.)
