I don't have a Mac so all I can do is offer general advice. First - make sure the problem really is QT and not some other changes you made. Otherwise you will go through a lot of changes and may not have audio at the end.
If you are not very computer literate, mplayer is a more complicated install on a Mac so try the faad instructions as per the wiki first. Only if faad fails should you try mplayer.
