I recently upgraded to SC7.0 and have noticed that gapless playback of LAME mp3 files doesn't seem to be working properly. I can definitely hear the transition between tracks on a live album.
I know the issue isn't with the files since they play back fine with both foobar2000 and on my iPod. In both of these situations, the transitions are completely seemless. Over the summer when I moved to using Linux, I noticed that some of my tracks wouldn't play with smooth transitions using the SB, but they would on my iPod and foobar2000. I then realized that this wasn't specific to Linux - I just hadn't noticed it before. I'll do some more experimenting to see if the issue is specific to SC7.0 since I still have a 6.5.4 system up and running. But in the meantime, I wanted to check to see if anybody else has noticed this problem. My impression now is that this feature never did work 100%. Since Apple was able to tackle this problem, I'm not sure why this is an issue for the squeezebox. My setup is SC7.0 running on P4 PC with 1GB RAM running SuSE 10.2. All of my files are LAME mp3 encoded at 192 kbs VBR. I'm not using the iTunes integration, except for the plugin to update iTunes offline. FLAC isn't an option for me right now - not enough disc space and I am not willing to manage 2 separate music collections - one for the SB and another for my (and my wife's) iPod. I have 2 SB3 boxes.
