Napster was initially completely free and never paid any money to artists, was trying to move to a subscription-based system but it all got lost in lawyer fees. The current version is close to what I'd like, but for two major problems: 1 - it only works while you're a member. Leave and all your music does. I appreciate why, but that does grate. 2 - no compatibility with, well, anything but WMP. Bit of a showstopper, really... What I do like is some of the comments on here that seem to indicate people think that the record companies are on the way out. Some of the arguments are actually quite compelling; it will be pleasing if the modern youth pirating the music of modern youth (me = old fogey, musically) cause the welcome downfall of fat cat record company bosses.
