Don't spend all your money on the hardware, because after a little while with the system your spending on new music is likely to increase sharply!! The server code (SqueezeCenter) is open source. The Squeezebox firmware is definitely closed, and I'm not sure about the handheld Controller. And you'll be glad to note that even Slim Devices' original product, the SliMP3, is still being supported and improved through software enhancements.
