Your dealer might have been referring to the function snarlydwarf mentioned, whereby you can make the SB3 emit IR by connecting an IR emitter to the SB3 headphone jack. Re eliminating wireless, it can be a big project to pull cat5 cable, but if that's more than you want to get into right now you could try homeplug adapters, which run ethernet over your electrical mains.
