I removed my silver faceplate and had it anodized black (this was way
before SD started selling the all-black model).

Your can "peel" it off.  Go very slowly and use very gentle pressure
and the faceplate will come off as the adhesive releases.  It also
helped to warm it up a little with a hairdryer at the same time.  The
metal is quite thin and will kink or bend if you use to much pressure. 
If it gets deformed it will be quite difficult to get it back to the
original shape.  Any kink will be permanent.

I reattached the 'black' faceplate using two sided Scotch tape.  Still
holding perfectly in place after probably two years.
