The current skin (I've been calling this "Logiskin") is just a set of php 'hooks' into the old site's SSI stuff. As far as the future site (I've been calling this "TKO"), your first guess was right on the money (or, rather, right on the OpenSource ;-) Drupal it is. I'm VERY excited about this -- this will represent a functionally new site with a much richer experience. For example, I'd like to include a module to track user contributed plug-ins similar to what Mozilla Firefox does so everyone can vote, rank, comment etc. Others could be something daily 'tip', background img, SC/SN skin, etc ... There's many exciting possibilities, this is just one example. RE logins, we most definetely would like to harmonize *.slim & SqueezeNetwork logins -- I'm not sure precisely what form this will take (or when) but this certainly will be improved and simplified while still maintaining a high level of security and privacy.
