AFAIK, the VFD on the Squeezebox Classic is, by far, the most expensive component on the hardware.
As other users pointed out, a Squeezebox 3 + Squeezebox Controller is a perfectly compatible pairing, and each can be purchased separately. It'll just cost you a bit more than the Duet (Receiver + Controller). For that matter, a Transporter + Squeezebox Controller is also a perfectly compatible pairing.
