Most of the information contained in this thread has been encapsulated

wiki entry and should be enough to get you up and running with Linux
(other than the bit about starting MiP before SC).

Won't take longer because it's an external HDD.  You can MiP for Linux/
Windows or Genpuid for Linux/Windows to do the analysis and archiving.
