Hi Everyone I have been really enjoying my SB-Classic plugged into stereo system. I figured that I would plug the SB-Classic into the back of my Linn AV5103 preamp digitally (at full volume) and just use the volume control on the preamp. This has all worked fine for my CDs ripped as FLAC (I guess with 44.1kHz 16bit data inside)
Anyway - I found a nice little utility for converting HDCD based files into 44.1kHz 24bit files (although only 20bits of data are used). I only have 3 or 4 HDCDs. The link to the post is here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=129136 The HDCD utility can be found here: http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~cjk32/hdcd The AV5103 cannot decode the HDCD data encoded in the regular PCM 16bit data. The 24bit FLAC files and the 16bit FLAC files both seem to work fine but I have been told that my AV5103 does not support 24bit PCM input. The PCM light turns on for 16 bit and 24 bit PCM data from the SB - but I don't know if the 24bit PCM data is being properly processed in my preamp at 24bits or not. Does this mean: (a)my DAC really is 24 bit - since a 16bit DAC cannot accept a 24bit signal (b)my DAC is 16bit and it is effectively resampling a 24bit PCM signal at 16bits and therefore degrading the sound (c)we cant be sure Like I said - very few HDCDs in my collection so this is not a major worry but I am interested to know. -- ant.perry Australia SB3 + Linn AV5103 processor HP T5710 thin client with FreeNAS & SC 7.1 Seagate Freeagent Pro 500GB ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ant.perry's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17504 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49735 _______________________________________________ discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
