I've been running Ubuntu since 5.x and haven't > had any issues with hardware compatibility. I've got 3 PCs all recent Intel chipset based (2 x Asus, 1 x Intel), Nvidia based video cards and everything just works "out of the box". In my experience, once configured/ customised (eg adding SC to the repository), there's very little "sudo" anything required.
