FWIW, we use the following Git installation instructions for OpenHatch's
Open Source Comes to Campus events
(https://openhatch.org/wiki/Open_Source_Comes_to_Campus/Curriculum/Laptop_setup/OSX_git)
and we don't seem to face the same configuration issues. It does need to
be updated for Mavericks 10.9 and Yosemite 10.10.

From my experience the git on old Macs issue is the number one problem
that keeps coming up again and again, and as evidenced by this email
discussion and the wiki page there's a lot of different solutions out
there. In the heat of battle, I've found that presenting helpers and
learners with multiple different options for fixing it doesn't go down
so well. What we really need is a super clear decision tree outlining
which option to take for which problem / OS X version.

We found success by using the git-osx-installer 1.8.4.2 found here:

If it does not work or you get an error with git v1.8.4.2, the
second thing that helped was to install or update the command line
tools using the command "xcode-select --install":

You could track down an older installer for Macs, install GitHub
for Mac (https://mac.github.com/), or install the command line
tools, either via XCode or by downloading just the command line
tools from Apple's developer site (for which you have to
register for a free Apple developer account). If, for some
reason, folks are already using Homebrew it can also install Git.
If you try GitHub for Mac I don't know to where that installs Git.
