(https://careers.stackoverflow.com/jobs/75776/research-software-engineer-java-python-web-university-of-oxford?a=ppBgs59q8A8 ) Overview of the role In this varied, interesting and challenging role the successful candidate will provide technical knowledge, software engineering and leadership ability for (i) a growing portfolio of data and knowledge management projects funded by UK, EU and NIH Big Data to Knowledge Initiative, and (i) activities for the ELIXIR UK node of the ELIXIR programme. Based in the Life, Natural and Biomedical Sciences team, the successful candidate will work closely with other members of the team, leading and contributing towards the enhancement of relevant components of the ISA software suite and of the BioSharing registry, with a large and growing user base (Sansone et al, Nature Genetics) The position requires a software engineer with both technical and social ability, and also experience and skills to manage more than one project, plan and monitor projects deadlines, assist in writing reports and communicate with geographically distributed collaborators. The successful candidate will liaise with end users and collaborators (e.g. at the European Bioinformatics Institute, TGAC, Stanford University, Manchester University, Imperial College), members of community-driven initiatives (e.g. working groups in the Research Data Alliance) and developers of data publication platforms journals (e.g. at Nature Publishing Group and BioMedCentral). The Life, Natural and Biomedical Sciences team, led by Dr. Sansone works to develop software and promote the creation and uptake of community-developed ontology, standards and curation best practices, and their pivotal role in enabling reproducible research, driving science and discoveries. Responsibilities/duties Manage own software development to meet project requirements, coordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines. To develop web applications which support projects, and which incorporate ‘smart’ decision making. To build environments within which scientists can communicate, leading to greater science. Undertake the research necessary to identify, develop or customize software applications appropriate to the project Coordinate with external contractors who are contributing to the software Act as a source of information and advice to other members of the project on software techniques and capabilities, especially in training other staff in using the system being developed. To represent the project and the University in collaboration meetings, conferences and at external meetings, either with other members of the group or alone. Work collaboratively with colleagues in other research groups, other departments, and partner institutions around the world Actively participate in group meetings and telecons where required Take advantage of appropriate training opportunities as these arise, in order to keep up to date with relevant skills and developments Carry out other appropriate duties as may be assigned from time to time as required Skills & Requirements Qualifications and Experience The successful candidate will - • Hold a degree in computer science or bioinformatics • Have demonstrable experience with web application frameworks • Have a high level of competency with HTML, JavaScript, XML, XSD, CSS, and AJAX • Have experience of working in multiple environments (e.g. Unix/Linux, Windows, Mac OS) • Have experience in developing cross browser applications • Have a good working knowledge of Java, databases and RESTful services; also Python/Django • Be knowledgeable of software development lifecycle, agile programming methodologies and tools (e.g. Git, Unit/Acceptance tests, Continuous Integration) • Have familiarity with semantic web technologies • Have some competence with design packages such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. As well as technical and design ability, it is essential that the individual is able to effectively communicate ideas and concepts between different groups. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to work well with colleagues and to collaborate with external partners, including other developers.
