Hi Ivan,
How were students trying to install on 10.8?
I've used the git-osx-installer
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/git-osx-installer/files/?source=navbar0
Snow Leopard images for 10.8 in the past with success.
Thanks,
Carol

Hi,
At the Weill Cornell workshop today, we found an ugly twist on getting
git working for old Macs. As reported in our troubleshooting wiki [1],
for Mac OS X 10.8, git throws an "Lazy symbol" error, even if the
installation went smoothly. The diagnosis for this is to try to do a
`git init` (it'll fail).
The only solution seems to be to download Xcode (apparently, the error
is because some libraries are missing and only get installed with
Xcode). But today, we found that Apple removed the proper Xcode
version from the Apple Store. Now the only fix is to go to the Apple
Developer website and search for the the right Xcode there. This
requires an Apple Developer account that the students probably won't have.
The only feasible thing is that instructors carry an USB with the old
version of Xcode (downloading, copying to a thumb drive, and then to
the student's laptop will take over an hour) and check people with
Macs for 10.8.5, preferable during the first day of the workshop.
Does someone know other alternative?
Best,
Ivan
