Data Carpentry did something similar last September with good success. We had a
remote site with helpers for an in-person workshop; instructors were both live
and remote at the same time. My observations:

1) Also having a live classroom in front of you was very helpful. The remote
classroom video was up on a TV screen to the side of the room too so you could
see everyone while teaching.

2) Video of everything everywhere was great. Adobe Connect had video of both
rooms and the instructor available and the instructor's screen. Participants
could log in and configure their laptops to see what they wanted and we had
multiple screens in our room and one screen in the remote room.

3) The experience and skill of the remote site leader (yay Katja Seltmann!) is
absolutely key. They have to be AV experts, know their participants, and know
all the lessons to be ready to pick them up if the video goes down.

Subject: [Discuss] experimenting with mixed-mode workshops

Hi,

Earlier this week, I did a day and a half of instructor training for the
NIH via web conferencing. It went much better than I expected, as did
the mixed-mode training we did last summer (where the instructor taught
via teleconference and screen sharing, but the students were all sitting
together, and there were helpers in the room).

We would like to try running half a dozen small workshops this summer
using the same model, in part to give new instructors a chance to get
some teaching experience, but also to see if we can put on workshops
without people having to travel as much (which will reduce hosts'
costs). We are therefore looking for:

- experienced instructors who would be willing to teach a couple of
half-days over the web, and

- novice instructors who'd like to host a workshop where they are, do
some parts of the teaching, and be a helper for the other parts (either
on their own or with friends)

We'll charge the usual admin fee for these workshops, but since there
won't be travel expenses, the overall cost for hosts should be much
less. If you're interested in taking part, please mail me directly
(rather than replying to the 'discuss' list) and I'll start figuring out
teleconferencing requirements and putting pairs together.

Thanks,
Greg
