In case this is helpful, my colleagues and I use overleaf and make comments in
latex with bold and a color.
My take on overleaf: There are limits to the number of figures (non-paying
version) and my papers timeout the online compiler more often than I’d like. I
use the git cloning features often for offline editing and pushing new figures.
How we comment:
You need a little latex-foo, but not much:
\newcommand{\phil}[1]{{\color{red}{\bf #1}}}
and in the text:
\phil{Some very enlightening comment}
