As an aside to the aside, I didn’t know that anti-url-shorteners was a cause..!
I can see the points against randomized url shorteners, but I use customized 
ones to help me share complex links. It is a lot easier to remember to type  
http://j.mp/jellyv  or http://j.mp/youvel  than type out the YouTube 
gobbledygook. These custom ones also have the opposite effect on link 
permanence, since I can edit the redirect if the URL ever changes. Of course 
this does assume stability of the host service, and since the .ly in bit.ly 
stands for Lybia, I could see how that might be a problem.
