Dear Anelda

Many thanks for the introductions. And just to share a few things with the
community and by way of introductions
We at the department of Computer Science University of Botswana are keen on
joining this network and engaging in the capacity building initiatives around
software and data carpentry.

We are embarking on projects and collaborative frameworks in the Southern
African Development Community (SADC) region in relation to develping
Cyberinfrastructure (HPC, NREns, Data Sharing, People) to provide a platform
for addressing National and Regional Challenges – this involves Infrastructure
Development, promoting R&D, Human Capital Development, Strategic partnerships
and governance of such Regional framework say through regional bodies like
http://www.sadc.int/ on STI.

We have had some traction with HPC capacity building, and had good
collaborations with international partners and we are constantly looking to
expand our linkages , see some initiatiatives involving collaborators in US
http://www.stem-trek.org/2015/11/04/sadc-sc15/
and the upcoming,
http://www.stem-trek.org/news-events/hpconcommonground/

We are also engaged in the ACM Chpater SIGHPC-RCE – promoting HPC in Resource
Constrained Environments
https://sighpc-rce.acm.org/

We are also keen on programmes for implementing our capacity building around
Datascience to train and support our researchers around University of Botswana
faculties http://www.ub.bw/
Botswana like other Southern African countries will host sites for The Square
Kilometer Project https://www.ska.ac.za/about/the-project/, and there is great
need to create a pipeline of researchers in all relevant areas and cross
cutting areas
We at the Computer Science department are engaging to create a basis for
training our students and stakeholders and are currently also going through a
curricullum review process to incorporate appropriate aspect for
Multidisciplinary degree.

We have also recently held High Performance Computing and Data Cyber
infrastructure and OpenData Workshop - http://www.cs.ub.bw/icicis/node/129.
This was at the ICICIS Conference the epartment of Computer Science organised
this year with National and international Stakekolders. We wish to grow this
event to become one of the platforms in Africa for these discussions in
promoting trustworthy open data sharing and open science

We are also keen on developing Industry-University-Student co-creation
platforms to help upskill our graduates in industry related skills, so we are
participating in the SAP University Allince - http://scn.sap.com/community/uac
SAP SE has announced “Plans for First Big Data Innovation Center and Innovation
Lab With Universities” -
https://news.sap.com/sap-big-data-innovation-center-lab/

I will be in Berlin and Potsdam for the annual SAP University Alliance EMEA
conference http://events.sap.com/sap-academic-conference-emea-2016/en/home to
engage.
We are always keen to engage and wish to engage the Sofware and Data Carpentry
network to look forward and host training events at the University for the
benefit of our large Botswana stakeholders,

I will also be in Dresden visiting TU Dresden and Biotec

So if anyone is in Berlin, Potsdam, Dresden I will be happy to meet and find
synergies

Many thanks

Regards

Tshiamo

Subject: Introducing Tshiamo from Botswana

Dear Carpenters,
I'd like to introduce Tshiamo Motshegwa, HPC Project Coordinator in the
Department of Computer Science at the University of Botswana. He's also now
getting involved in H3Africa bioinformatics projects with colleagues at his
university.
Tshiamo was recently introduced to SWC/DC at the CODATA/RDA Research Data
Science Summer School at ICTP and participated in the SWC/DC workshop we ran in
South Africa this week.
He will be traveling to Germany this coming week and will be in Berlin &
Potsdam from 4 - 9 September and in Dresden thereafter. He's quite interested
to become more involved in the community and I was wondering if anyone may be
in those areas and keen to meet up with him for dinner or a drink.
Tshiamo is copied on the email - please get in touch with him directly.
Thanks!
Anelda
