Dear Software and Data Carpentry community,

Our Code of Conduct is foundational to the Software and Data Carpentry
communities, as it sets expectations for conduct in our workshops and all
our spaces, online and in person, helping to ensure a welcoming environment
for all of our community members.

As many of you already know from our August Community Call and our blog post
<http://www.datacarpentry.org/blog/code-of-conduct/> calling for volunteers
for the new Policy subcommittee, Data and Software Carpentry have been
updating our Code of Conduct to clarify language and define clear
guidelines. The Policy Committee has completed this process, and is excited
to share our new Code of Conduct.

Software and Data Carpentry Code of Conduct
<http://www.datacarpentry.org/code-of-conduct/>

This effort was undertaken in response to feedback from our community that
the existing Code of Conduct lacked some important elements, including
clear guidelines for enforcement of the Code and adjudication of conduct
violation-related disputes. There was also feedback from the community that
the language of the existing Code of Conduct could be improved to clarify
what types of behavior would be considered inappropriate to engage in in
community spaces and therefore a violation of the Code.

In response to this feedback, a joint Policy subcommittee was formed to
solicit and integrate community feedback to draft an updated policy.
Carpentry staff and Steering Committee members on this committee (Pauline
Barmby - chair, Chris Hamm, Simon Waldman, Jonah Duckles and Erin Becker)
have worked with members of our community over the past months to craft
these guidelines. The Policy committee (chaired by Pauline Barmby), will be
responsible for adjudicating and maintaining records of reported Code of
Conduct violations, as well as serving as advocates for the CoC and
moderating SWC/DC communication channels. The Policy subcommittee has put
together a reporting guide and enforcement manual to ensure that any
reported Code of Conduct violations are handled fairly and that our process
for adjudicating disputes is transparent.

We are incredibly grateful to our volunteer community for their input and
to the members of the Policy committee and to our SWC SC liaison Karin
Lagesen and DC liaison Tracy Teal, for their dedication to ensuring that
our community remains welcoming to all. Please join us in extending a warm
thank you to the Policy committee and to our community for engaging in this
important work.

Sincerely,

Pauline Barmby and Erin Becker for the Policy Subcommittee
