Bob Muenchen has made a career out of helping people transition from
proprietary software (SAS, Stats, and SPSS) to R. His website r4stats.com
is definitely worth checking out.

He's also a super nice guy and I'm sure he'd be happy to share his
thoughts/perspective if you reach out.
