Background: The Center for Open Science (COS) develops free, open source
tools to support the scientific workflow (i.e., Open Science Framework),
fosters community standards and efforts for open practices, and conducts
metascience research - science on scientific practices. COS is now hiring
a Reproducible and Open Practices Trainer to support an upcoming, major
project under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Next
Generation Social Science (NGS2) program. We are seeking a
quantitatively-oriented, passionate trainer with experience in open and
transparent research practices to train, support, and foster open,
reproducible research practices across the sciences. The trainer will work
with project teams on use of the OSF in support of the NGS2 program
objectives, and when time allows, will work with other COS training staff
to support the Center’s efforts towards increasing OSF adoption by
individual researchers and universities, as well as help current users take
advantage of the full suite of OSF features for openness and
reproducibility. All training and created materials are free and openly
licensed. The trainer must have strong social and organizational skills, as
well as the ability to communicate with researchers from a broad range of
scientific domains. This position is appropriate for recent or past
Master’s students with past experience in curriculum development and
training.

Responsibilities: The Reproducible and Open Practices Trainer will support
COS’ training efforts for the DARPA NGS2 project over the next 3.5 years.
This project will entail working with many internal and external
stakeholders to test and evaluate strategies for greater reproducibility.
The trainer will work closely with many members of the COS team and be the
primary trainer for this project, working frequently with DARPA program
officers and other project teams. The trainer will provide active,
hands-on consultation for open, transparent, and reproducible best
practices in tools and research workflows. Training strategies might
include short-term visits to project sites; lectures and training at
conferences; virtual consulting and webinars; and development and
maintenance of education materials and practical guides for distribution.
Trainings will include open science, reproducibility practices, and open
source research tools. The trainer will assist in forming and maintaining
COS’s best practices for reproducible research, coordinate and grow our
onsite and virtual training offerings, and collaborate with the whole COS
team in making its infrastructure and products accessible, useful, and
applicable to scientists across research disciplines. This position will
involve approximately 25-50% travel time, or an average of two trips per
month.

Skills:

   -

Passion for reproducible research and open tools.
   -

   Experience in scientific research practices.
   -

Experience training on software tool and/or workflow methodologies.
   -

Extremely high social and communication skills.

Adaptivity to rapidly changing demands in a high performance workplace.
   -

   Very strong writing skills.

Notes: The Center for Open Science is an equal opportunity employer and
strongly encourages applications from members of groups underrepresented in
science and technology industries. The Center for Open Science (COS) is a
non-profit organization based in Charlottesville, Virginia dedicated to
improving the alignment between scientific values and scientific
practices. As a tech start-up, the COS team moves quickly, identifies
problems and creates solutions, encourages risk-taking, blends science and
technology, is highly collaborative, is high energy, and is dedicated to
openness. COS has three primary activities: (1) infrastructure development
to support the scientific workflow (http://osf.io/) - documentation,
archiving, sharing, and registration - and connect with other open
technologies, (2) community building among open-source developers, open
science researchers, and the broader scientific community, and (3)
metascience, research on scientific practices. COS is supported by a mix
of funders, including the NIH, the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, John
Templeton Foundation, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Hewlett
Foundation. Get more information about COS at its website, and in papers
articulating a vision for “Scientific Utopia” for scientific communication
and scientific practices.

Applying: Please submit a resume and cover letter explaining your
background and interest in the position. Questions about the position and
COS are welcome.
