The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education divides
PhD-granting universities in the US into three categories (usually
called R1, R2, and R3). As near as I can tell, here's the stats on
where we've run Software Carpentry and Data Carpentry workshops:
Cat Num WS %age
R1 115 89 77.4
R2 107 15 14.0
R3 112 2 1.8
I'm sure I've mis-ascribed some workshops, but the result is clear:
we're five times more likely to teach at an R1 than at an R2, and more
than seven times more likely to teach at an R2 than an R3. I'd be very
interested in seeing a similar breakdown for other countries, e.g.,
Russell Group vs. others in the UK.
Thanks,
Greg
