Hi Pat,
We’re doing exactly this at the moment: teaching programming and simple
mathematical modelling using (mostly) exclusively biological problems, to
first-year (first semester) biology students. I’ve written a blog post
<https://flxlexblog.wordpress.com/2017/03/08/a-new-1st-semester-bachelor-course-introduction-to-computational-modelling-for-the-biosciences>
about the project. We even are writing a book, but this won’t be published
until next year, which means it may come out too late for you.
We have also been in contact with the "Nature, In Code” author and he seemed
interested in making a python version, but I don't think anything concrete came
out of it - it may be worth contacting him.
Best,
Lex
