Dear all, # Job(s) 1 -
I've mostly been lurking for a while, but have recently started working at Gigantum - a company that I *hope* intersects with the activities of this group. Gigantum is a Washington DC based company where we're building an open-source tool that facilitates easy sharing of complete environments - complementing tools like Docker, Jupyter, and Git to provide a friendlier, more robust approach to sharing and tracking how you made that pretty graph. Members of under-represented groups are highly encouraged to apply, and I welcome any feedback about anything that might be perceived as a barrier in our writing (including this email). There are two jobs, front end and docker/cloud: - https://stackoverflow.com/jobs/141605/front-end-developer-react-gigantum - https://stackoverflow.com/jobs/138754/cloud-engineer-python-kubernetes-gigantum Main company website here, and you're also welcome to follow up with me: http://gigantum.io We'll have a friends and family beta "real soon now" and if anyone in the community is interested in kicking the tires, drop me a line! # Job 2 - computational educational research consulting In my other life, I am an independent researcher. I'm primarily working with a Japanese educational company to provide teachers with tools for observing and improving teaching. Our deliverable (for March) is a dashboard that lets teachers review students' "synchronization" with the rest of the class using (relatively simple) machine vision approaches along with correlated academic data, and we'll build out from there. Currently, I'm doing most of this work in R and ClojureScript, and using a very Unix-y ffmpeg approach for video collection. There are obviously huge parallels here with the interests of this group. Evaluating classrooms is a hard problem, so it's important to choose fertile ground to grow a new set of tools. In fact, AI-based approaches have been employed for at least 10 years in classrooms with very little that has scaled out to general usage (to my knowledge - I'm happy to be pointed towards examples of impacts!). The difference here is that we have a highly aligned company with over 20,000 students taught by over 2,000 teachers across 200 fairly comparable teaching centers. There are strong allies in the company ranging from front-line teachers to the president. We've published 2 conference papers at this point - one internal and one in collaboration with U Tokyo, and another ongoing collaboration with Tel Aviv University. Now, we want to turn our attention more towards sustainable, ongoing improvements in education. If that sounds cool, drop me a line. At this point, I could likely sustain a small contract in the 1 week - 1 month range depending on negotiated rates, etc. Preference would be for someone in Baltimore, the Tokyo area, or Tel Aviv. In addition, if you are a researcher looking to do an experiment or develop a technology that would be a good fit, that's also welcome! Best, Dav
