Head of Research Software Engineering [UCL]
Bloomsbury, London, South East
Reward – Competitive plus benefits
This is an exciting opportunity to further develop and embed UCL’s sector
leading Research Software Engineering capability. As a global,
research-intensive university, and a pioneer in the UK Research Software
Engineering movement, UCL already has a professional research software
development offering which is recognised as leading the sector. Driven by
demand from the research community, the RSE team at UCL has grown from its
embryonic beginnings to become a 12 strong, well- established team offering
innovative consultancy in research software development and data analytics.

UCL now needs to recruit a collaborative, communicative and ambitious Head of
Research Software Engineering to build on the success of this high-performing
team. The new post-holder will mature the operating model for RSE at UCL,
further widening uptake of RSE services and cement UCL’s reputation in the
national and international research community.

University College London has over 45,000 students and staff and is one of the
world’s leading research intensive universities. This mission critical role
will form part of the wider Research IT services leadership team. The
successful candidate will have end to end ownership for research software
engineering within the Information Services Division plus lead the strategic
evolution of the RSE discipline and the communities of practice for research
software engineering across UCL.

The Role:

• Expand the Research Software Engineering group’s reach, depth and quality of
service provision. Further embed RSE as a key enabler of innovative
world-leading research at UCL.

• Drive continuous improvement in research software engineering practice at
UCL; build reliable, repeatable, scalable software engineering services which
can be rapidly deployed on new projects.
• Professionally represent UCL in the national and international RSE community.
Be a thought leader in the RSE movement, sharing and publicising UCL’s success
in this space and acting as advocate for the UCL brand.
