As a global, research-intensive university, and a pioneer in the UK Research Software Engineering movement, UCL already has a professional research software development offering which is recognised as leading the sector. Driven by demand from the research community, the RSE team at UCL has grown from its embryonic beginnings to become a 12 strong, well- established team offering innovative consultancy in research software development and data analytics. UCL now needs to recruit a collaborative, communicative and ambitious Head of Research Software Engineering to build on the success of this high-performing team. The new post-holder will mature the operating model for RSE at UCL, further widening uptake of RSE services and cement UCL’s reputation in the national and international research community. University College London has over 45,000 students and staff and is one of the world’s leading research intensive universities. This mission critical role will form part of the wider Research IT services leadership team. The successful candidate will have end to end ownership for research software engineering within the Information Services Division plus lead the strategic evolution of the RSE discipline and the communities of practice for research software engineering across UCL. The Role: • Expand the Research Software Engineering group’s reach, depth and quality of service provision. Further embed RSE as a key enabler of innovative world-leading research at UCL. • Drive continuous improvement in research software engineering practice at UCL; build reliable, repeatable, scalable software engineering services which can be rapidly deployed on new projects. • Professionally represent UCL in the national and international RSE community. Be a thought leader in the RSE movement, sharing and publicising UCL’s success in this space and acting as advocate for the UCL brand.
