In the 30 or so server range the "free" version of Big Brother will work. Go
much higher than that and you will need to use bbgen with it (checkout
www.deadcat.net). For big brother there is an install guide on deadcat that
will get your running quickly. If you want integrated trending with Big
Brother will need to use LARRD (on deadcat and included in the install guide).

I moved to using hobbitmon which has recently changed name to xymon due to
legal reasons. (hobbitmon.sourceforge.net)

Hobbitmon is based on Big Brother, so the 100/1000's of extensions on deadcat
work reasonably easily.

It is server focused which is what you are asking for. It uses agents which
simply gather data and send to the central server, agents by default do not do
analysis, making them "lightweight".

Trending using RRD is integrated to the product.

Active and helpful user community.

Wide range of client support including windows.

The server runs on *NIX, including FreeBSD.

The main developer is using it to monitor 1000's of hosts.

Highly configurable alerting.

Enterprise class monitoring system.

If you want a network focused tool you could look at OpenNMS.

I tried nagios out and was frustrated managing cacti along side to get trending
and it was not integrated. Why poll a device twice to get data?

I have heard good things about groundwork as well but not looked at it closely.
