I have a different sort of question for the list today - about Managing a systems "team" instead of just a system. Does anyone have any recommendations for useful metrics to measure the performance of the systems team?
I would also appreciate any feedback on methods of measurement that worked very badly. Any links to good materials on the topic that you've found useful? I am new to the topic and would like to hear from any of you in the trenches about what you think actually works. Some of the goals for why I'm asking this question: 1) Improve visibility into Systems team to the rest of the company 2) Find good ways of showing how good of a job we're doing to people who really don't grok Systems. 3) Provide good goals for the team to aim for. 4) Find an answer that is good for a small company with only 3 system administrators I know when my folks are doing a good job, but I've found it challenging for how to articulate that to those outside of the field. I've tried running iostat on my coworkers, but found they don't appreciate it very much, so I'm looking for alternatives. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks for your time, Neil Neely
