I can no longer imagine running an enterprise box without an offline mirror (one copy per week) to protect against the rm -rf factor. Since I have scripts that prevent overwriting the offline mirror (we call it an OS copy) unless the system has a certain amount of uptime, my backout procedure is to boot off the mirror and then reverse copy back to the original disk. It isn't just for patching, but any change at all. This copy disk doesn't need to be mirrored (but is nice if it is), since it has a different purpose than spindle failure. It just needs to be protected from the rm -rf or other software level failure. Very few issues caused by patching, mostly around Veritas Foundation Suite being installed and the procedures to follow after patching not being done. ---- "The speed of communications is wondrous to behold.
