I recall a discussion on NANOG (IIRC) many years ago where people were 
discussing the problems of routing multicast, and someone (Randy Bush, again 
IIRC) basically said, "Who cares? Don't bother. Shut up and sell more 
bandwidth."

I think that, in essence, sums up why multicast doesn't work.  (Yes, I realize 
there are many other factors that go into it, but I think this is a big one.)
