Unfortunately, "linux" is such a vague term. ;-) I work on redhat/centos and solaris regularly. I started getting into ubuntu about 1-2 years ago, and it was like a whole new world. Just as disorienting as if you were going from solaris to any linux. A few days ago, I built my first opensuse box in a decade. And once again, I'm just as disoriented as anything. And OSX is a whole different beast too. All of these things are so different, they are truly different OSes. The one most valuable advice I could offer you is: Choose what application or purpose you want to work toward, and start learning specifically a distribution that is well suited for that purpose. I would suggest ubuntu if you want to support peoples' desktops. I would suggest fedora or centos if you want to support externally-facing web servers. I would suggest RHEL or centos if you want to support internal compute servers such as HPC applications etc. And I would suggest opensuse/sles if you want to support novell products. > - What admin task did you do in the last week that you consider a linux > specific thing? i.e. editing the password file doesnt count, dealing > with ReiserFS does.... Backups. Install printers. Install matlab. Although matlab is available on other platofrms, the process is different for each platform. Virtualization - xen, kvm, vmware workstation, generally used in linux and not other platforms. Install zenoss. Same situation as matlab. > - Linux War stories, What was the worst linux disaster you have had > that I should read up on to make sure I could fix it if hit with it in > future. Try installing mysql5 on rhel4/centos4. _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list [email protected] http://lopsa.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discuss This list provided by the League of Professional System Administrators http://lopsa.org/
