Just tried unison and it works great. Threads are folders and you can

Okay, sorry I was confused, but the key term you should be using is
usenet.  All email programs support standard common listserv style
news groups not.  Most email programs do not support usenet  news
groups.  That's like expecting your email program to be a web browser.
 It has been so long, happily, since I used Outlook Express that I
forgot it had a news reader feature.

I would recommend you try OSXnews or Unison.  Both are newer usenet
news readers and deliberately modeled to have an interface similar to
Mail.  I tried both with VoiceOver and didn't have any problems as far
as I took it, but neither is a program I have any experience with.
