David: the reason you couldn't get the port command to work is that it probably isn't in your path; I had the same problem. It's in /opt/local/bin and you either need to type that path or add it to your path. Be sure to do

sudo port selfupdate (with full path if you haven't included it in your path) once you've installed the ports package and before you try to install individual packages.
