One more time.
MAIL IS NOT NEWS!!
Yes, some mail clients have news reading capabilities, but those are
the let's be all things to all people type of programs. They have
mail, news, web browsing, mailing list capabilities, smpt servers,
and pop3 accounts all built-in. For some reason, windows folks seem
to enjoy this sort of thing, which is why I guess I never fit in
there. I'd much rather a program concentrate on one task and do it
well rather than do everything, and do none of them well.
If you can't live w/o newsgroups, then go get a news reading program.
If you want something that does multiple things including news
groups, then run lynx. It handles all that stuff, as does pine.
If you want just news reading, then there has already been postings
here about such programs. OSXNews does a decent job, and is fairly
accessible, though you must use real mouse clicks to subscribe to
your groups. Otherwise, it's not a bad proggy.

Hi,
My big hang-ups right now with VO and Mail are not being able to
use spell checker for some reason and no apparent support for
subscribing to and reading the newsgroups for my classes.

Larry,
I believe that iTunes supports album art sorts of things. My
daughter fiddles with that sort of thing quite often in itunes if I'm
understanding the concept correctly.
You asked about a mail program. I do not use any other app but I'm
wondering what sort of issues or concerns cause you difficultiy in
the Mail app.
