Smart Mailboxes and inbox keep track of each other, as far as I could
tell the brief time I played with them.

I have found no way to preserve the read/unread status if the
preview pane is visible. However, in general, for strictly vo
users, the preview pane isn't necessary anyhow. The arrow keys
work for me, it reads status, from, subject, and date, and if I
want to read the message, I hit enter, vo-down, interact, vo-down
again, then vo-a if I want to read the whole thing, otherwise, I
let it read on it's own, and if the message is short, it reads the
whole thing. It's quite a few more keystrokes than using the jump
command, but it works for me, and retains my read/unread status.
The other method suggested here was to assign a keystroke to read
upon keypress in the universal options. This works very well, but
it reads the header info as well as thhe message body, and for me
that's too much, so I don't use that most of the time, since I
don't like things that take time unnecessarily. *grin*
Perhaps you could use a smart mailbox to mirror the main mailbox,
and use that one to read the emails, it's possible that the status
wouldn't change in the regular inbox while the smart mailbox kept
track of status as the preview pane causes it to do, but I'd not
count on it. Something to consider though.

Good morning all. I am going to be teaching Mac to an associate so
that he can teach his client and I am trying to come up with the
easiest way to do things. I have found that the Jump command is
actually working and for whatever reason on my machine it was not
reliable but it seems to be now. What I would like to know: is it
possible to move the splitter to a point where the read or unread
status is preserved and not effected by moving the arrows up and
down the colums? I would like to teach the jump command but find
that if the preview pain is not exposed it doesn't work relyably.
However, when the pain is exposed as I arrow down through the
messages the status changes to read. I do realize that I could
use the vo keys to move through the table but would like to try to
make the arrow thing work. Let the thoughts start flowing forth
and thanks.
