I just don't bother with worrying about whether messages are read or
not rather than using the preview pane. This way you have two ways to
read messages. You an use the jump command to go to the text or if
you have a key set for reading selected text (I believe it's in
universal access but it's in the archives; try going through looking
for f8 in the subject line) you can just hit that and hear the whole
message. Actually, there's a third way also; you can cursor over to
message content and interact with that.
Of course, when freedombox gets ported to the Mac (coming soon
according to the website), if you still don't like Mac mail, you'll
have that choice as I believe you are also still using freedombox.
But I really like mail on my Mac now; it just took me some time to
get used to it compared to Pine and mutt.
